Pigeon

I hit a pigeon today, semi on purpose. It was out in the middle of the turn lane and I made no attempt to avoid it, I even let out a wild "Pigeon!" as I careened towards it. I did start to break a little as I crossed that point where I realized the pigeon had made a fatal miscalculation. I say fatal because it proceeded to explode into a poof of feathers as it hit my bumper, rolled across my hood, slid up my windshield, and then tumbled to the curve. Unlike my past encounter with the cat, I am finding this morbidly humorous for some reason. Perhaps it's the context, or I just value pigeons less than house cats.

It's an overwhelming game at the beginning, but it has a lot to offer. Some new features this time around, you can hire marines to board enemy vessels and capture them :3 Also they updated the interface nicely and we get to visit that solar system we all know and love. I've already set up a few trade ships and have netted myself a decent 15 million towards my burgeoning space empire.

Repairing a Pirate ship I captured.

Rings of Uranus

A planet in enemy territory.
Interesting

Curious thoughts were striking me, so I decided to peruse google. A little snipit from something on Quantum Tunnelling "If the effect is real it is difficult to see why it should not be possible to transmit signals into the past by placing the apparatus in a fast-moving frame of reference." Crazyness, but it's wishy washy as they say that it might just appear to be the case due to the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle. Of course, if we ever had anything that could recieve such a signal, a good test would be to see if we immediately start gettting messages from the future :)

http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Relativity/SpeedOfLight/FTL.html

Games

Well, I beat the crap out of Resident Evil 5. It was fun, but would be more fun with another person since it's really made for co-op.

Going to the family reunion this weekend as usual, which is always fairly bad for me since I don't really make conversation. It will amount to 3-4 hours of me sitting around or possibly walking in and outside of the building as people ask me how I have been doing and my closer family members give me shit about still being unemployed. It would be bad to bring a book to read, maybe I could get away with a notebook or something.

Educaten

Introducing simi-usless knowledge for your consumption.

In the numerous ages of Naval combat we're had in history, several terms have been coined and became general knowledge in the populous. Today we'll take a look at the distinction between the terms 'Battleship' and 'Warship'

As a great many people are aware, the term Battleship refers distinctly to a particular class of naval vessel. "A battleship is a large, heavily armored warship with a main battery consisting of the largest caliber of guns. Battleships were larger, better armed, and better armored than cruisers and destroyers." The term actually stems from line-of-battle ship back from the time of sail. These ships were huge, and relied on their massive firepower and armor to see them through combat. Unfortunately these assets also make them too large a target in a world with highly effective submarines and long range missiles. Not to mention the large costs of operating a 800ft + ship. This means that Battleships are no longer in service with any militaries.

Oh my, that was interesting! Let’s jump to our second term.

"A warship is a ship that is built and primarily intended for combat." Ah so here we see that we actually use the term Warship to describe any of the numerous classes of ships that have been in use throughout the history of Naval combat.

Awesome. Of course people will always say, "But Charlie, language is fluid, what mass majority makes of it." This is true. Language is at least partly what we make of it, but that is all the more reason for me to fight for terms that have value to me (not to mention I am willing to bet most people at least have a vague understanding of the differences in these two terms). Plus, the mass majority are ignoramuses, do you want to be an ignoramus? I thought not.

Reference’s pulled from the relevant pages on Wikipedia.

Birthday

Well, my birthday came and went pretty much as usual. I did go out and get a new mouse since my old one was showing some age in button use. Unfortuantly I ended up going with the most expensive one they had, setting me back $140. Really don't need to be doing that kind of stuff now that I don't have a job, my only other regret is that I am not sure it's worth the price tag. Sure it polls at 1ms, has up to 5600 dpi, and can respond at a speed of 50 Gs (which would liquify my hand or something); but am I really going to notice the difference?

Sadly I still have a few bits I lack to complete my Ultramarines army, which means spending more money. In similar new I decided that I won't start looking for another job till I finish getting this army together, though since I also plan on continuing to pay off my student loan as I was during the last three months, my time is much more limited than it has been in these past two years.

Star Trek

Alright, so let me first say that I thought it was awesome and I believe they did an amazing job bringing the original Trek back to life.

In the wake of the movie there is only one snag that really tears at my Trekkie soul. The story they wove works, it works well. Of course I feel some sadness about the Treks that have gone before it and that we are moving into a new era where they cannot follow. The weird thing is that this passage isn't going to be simply a fading into memory as one would expect. Sadly it's the same universe, just that all of our past Treks are wiped clean. Instead of it simply being something new, it's like we took the etch-e-sketch and shook it vigorously.

This brings up interesting dilemmas as well. Voyager is still searching for its maker, that probe is coming for humpbacks, Kahn is still sleeping, the Borg are assimilating, and countless other relics of our past Treks are still out there waiting to happen. None of our favorite moments ever happened. I understand that some people probably won't understand why that makes me sad, or the reasons why this is something special as far as remakes go.

In the end, I love how they're bringing new life to the franchise; I'm just a bit heartbroken over what had to die to make it possible.

Today

A girl from my past, she reminded me of Catherine maybe but someone I had known for sure. I run into her where she works at some store in a mall. Quite conversation turns to something more personal from our past, though the exact words escape me. I lament the fact that her attention was lost on me back then, explaining to her how all but the bluntest of cues escape me. She moves in for an unexpected kiss. We remain there, locked in an embrace for what seems like an eternity. Perhaps fare wells are exchanged then because we go our separate ways.

Then things get weird.

As my ship is leaving that planet, I can't escape the feeling that I've leaving behind what is most important to me. I have to know. We turn around and I search for her, but her father tells me she has gone on some journey though a dangerous desert region. Utilizing the ship, my crew and I test out the transporter as we try to locate her in the dunes. Finally we find one of the aliens she was traveling with, bleeding and broken by some beast native to that region or maybe unknown assailants. Quickly we transport him aboard the ship but he seems too far gone, he only whispers riddles as he lays there dying. Another of his kind is nearby however, and makes sense of these dying gasps. In the attack they hid her somewhere they thought was safe my interpreter relates. He knows the location but upon this revelation I awake.

Direction

Everyone seems to be telling me that I should be doing something other than working at the call center. One of our trainers continually tells me this. Other classmates probe me for what I will do in the future, as if there is some path I am on leading me to greater things. People have said similar things throughout my life, but I've never seen such a path. I'm like a blind man crawling through a desert, my way is lost. When I stumble upon something, anything, I hold on as tightly as possible for fear of loosing it and once more fumbling around in my darkness. Even though a perfect oasis may be just beyond my reach, my senses are dead to it's presence.

Call Center

I'm not sure I'm capable of doing this job. Today, or rather yesterday as it is past one AM Friday now, was the first day of really working and taking calls on the floor. It was horrible, I made every mistake you could make, I felt bad about every single one of my calls. The worst part is that I don't feel like I learned much at all from the experience. :\

Death of a cat

Dispite having gone hunting with my father as a kid, I never really killed anything. I mean sure I shot bugs with my bb gun, even tried to kill some frogs that were plauging dad's tank. Well, tonight on the way back home I hit a cat. Just walking out there in the road like it was normal. Tried not to hit it, but you know how that goes. Saw it flailing around on the ground in my rear view mirror. It was blackish with orange spots. Certainly a part of me feels that it paied the price for it's lack of perception, but it's weird. I remember back when I was a kid an armadillo got caught in the fence over at my dad's property. They wanted me to take a stick and go kill it, but I refused. It's weird.
